He graduated from New York City's Stuyvesant High School in 1945, and received his B.A. from Columbia University in 1949, followed by his Ph.D from Cornell University in 1953. He became an instructor of chemistry at Cornell in 1954, was appointed assistant professor in 1955 and a full professor in 1963. He was chair of the chemistry department between 1978 and 1981.
