The compressibility equation (χ) can be derived from the density fluctuations of the grand canonical ensemble (Eq. 3.16 in Ref. 1). For a homogeneous system:

kBT∂ρ∂p|T=1+ρ∫h(r)dr=1+ρ∫[g(2)(r)−1]dr=⟨N2⟩−⟨N⟩2⟨N⟩=ρkBTχT

where p is the pressure, T is the temperature, h is the total correlation function, g(2)(r) is the pair distribution function and kB is the Boltzmann constant.

For a spherical potential

1kBT∂p∂ρ|T=1−ρ∫0∞c(r)4πr2dr≡1−ρc^(0)≡11+ρh^(0)≡11+ρ∫0∞h(r)4πr2dr

Note that the compressibility equation, unlike the energy and pressure equations, is valid even when the inter-particle forces are not pairwise additive.
